The Ultimate Paleo Guide: Everything You Could Ever Want To Know About The Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet

I talk quite a bit about the paleo diet & I get a lot of questions about the paleo diet.

Rightfully so - Impossible Abs is a variation of the paleo diet with several tweaks and I recommend it as the go-to diet of choice for people looking to lose weight without having to calorie count all day, every day. Why? Because paleo focuses on eating real food – something so important, it seems laughable to suggest, but is so basic that it’s often overlooked.

Now, people tend to get hung up on the name “Paleo” a lot and ask if cavemen really did eat bacon (answer: I don’t know, but I bet they would have if they had it available). But I think they’re missing the point and simultaneously miss out on a lot of it’s benefits of paleo.

To be honest: I don’t think paleo is the end-all, be-all of nutrition, but for 95% of people, it’s a great start. I’ve seen people lose 70+ pounds, reverse diabetes and change their entire lives with the paleo diet. It’s not perfect (there are some adjustments you can make to it depending on your individual goals), but the reason I talk about the paleo diet so much is that it works – plain & simple.

And so, while I’ve talked about it here & there and done some video posts on it, I wanted to do more. So, quietly, in the background I’ve been working on something bigger – much bigger.

Enter Ultimate Paleo Guide

Over a year ago I started working on a project that would eventually morph into Ultimate Paleo Guide. As you can probably guess, it’s designed to be the ultimate guide to the paleo diet that you can find anywhere on the internet. While it started with just a few posts from my own experience, it quickly expanded more & more as I continued to detail out the intricacies, benefits & variations of the diet through my own experience & research.

UPG

Now, over a year and over 200 articles later, I feel Ultimate Paleo Guide (UPG) is finally starting to live up to it’s name and I wanted to share it with you. It’s not quite done, but it’s getting close. Think of it as a better-researched, more in-depth, & more entertaining version of the encyclopedia entry on the paleo diet. Forget wikipedia & google, we’re aiming to have all your answers on the paleo diet available on UPG.

I’ve referenced it here and there in the No Excuse Workout, blog posts & other materials unofficially before, but today we’re officially putting UPG out into the world along with a flagship product launching today as well (and I’ll tell you about in a quick minute).

Los Paleo Recipe Book: Mexican Paleo Recipes

Los PaleoThe site is packed with paleo food lists, meal plans and other resources on the paleo diet, but there was one thing I was missing…

RECIPES.

The call for more recipes has been almost deafening. Honestly, it’s not something I quite understand as I’m perfectly happy to eat chicken and broccoli 5 days a week, but apparently most people don’t feel the same way. So, while it might take a few repetitions to get something through my head, I finally started to listen.

Meet Los Paleo.

Los Paleo is the first response to the call for more delicious paleo recipes as the first flagship project of Ultimate Paleo Guide. While I’m still working on my cooking chops – I’m still woefully uncreative when it comes to cooking creativity (I tend to focus on efficiency) – I partnered with the wonderful & talented Marla Sarris (1/3 of the Spyr Media crew) to created & design these paleo recipes. Inspired after being challenged to make 100% paleo versions of her local Mexican favorites, Marla got to work & Los Paleo is the result of her culinary genius.

I could fawn over Marla’s work in the kitchen all day long, but it’s much easier to just show you. This is just a short sample of what you’ll be finding inside Los Paleo.

Two Foods You Should Stop Eating Yesterday

What if I told you that most people could cut out a huge chunk of health problems just by eliminating two groups of food? Well, you can.

what if

Cutting out these two food groups can help regulate your hormone levels, make it easier to lose weight, improve gut health, normalize blood sugar levels & even improve allergies. If you take a look at food groups through the lens of the 80/20 Principle, these two foods would be the 20% of foods that cause 80% of the problems in most people’s diets.

So what are they? Well here are the two foods you should stop eating – yesterday preferably. Here we go.

Dairy

What Standard Nutrition Advice Would Have You Believe:

“It’s great for you! It’s got calcium! But be careful of that fatty, whole milk. Better drink either skim or 1%, just to be safe – and try to forget that 1% tastes like water. I mean it has to be good for you right? Besides thousands of terrible milk mustaches & “got milk” campaigns can’t be wrong – can they?”

Well…actually…

Why Dairy Is Actually Terrible For You

Dairy has different levels of bad, but particularly low-fat, 1% and skim milk are highly insullogenic – that means they cause your insulin levels to spike and causes your body to stop burning fat.  And don’t get me started on the fact that it’s nearly impossible to find chocolate milk without HFCS and corn starch in it. Really, corn starch in your milk? When’s the last time you said “yum” to corn starch? Toss in the fact that a huge portion of the population is lactose intolerant and the links to cancer that milk is known for and the picture isn’t looking too pretty.

If you’re going to have dairy, make it either fermented (cheese, whey protein, grassfed butter, or yogurt – without a ton of a sugar). Sure, ice cream is delicious  but there’s really no need for a daily shellacking of dairy in your diet.

Grains

Standard Nutrition Advice:

You need grains more than you need oxygen – they’re that important! Why else would we need 6-11 servings a day? I mean, just look at this chart!

USDA_Food_Pyramid

“They help with digestion & give you fiber! Not to mention, it’s completely UNREALISTIC to actually cut out ALL grains from your diet. I’m Italian, I can’t live without grains – we’re not animals, you know?”

Well…actually…

Why Grains Are Terrible For You

Grains are actually pretty unnecessary. They contain gluten, lectins and phytates that make minerals unavailable to your body & create situations prime for obesity.

Oh, and that’s just the start. It can lead to leaky gut, weight gain and even cause type 2 diabetes. That’s before we get into how these simple carbohydrates affect your blood sugar & insulin levels and cause you to store fat instead of burning it and using it for fuel. Whether you’re into paleo or not, when you look at grains (and wheat especially), there’s a ton of really, really good reasons not to eat them.

grains

Despite all of this, 6-11 servings of grains was common nutritional advice from the government up until 2011!

The truth is, for most people, there’s really very little reason to include many (or any) grains in their diet on a regular basis and once you try it, they’re not so “impossible” to cut out of your diet either. If you need a substantial amounts of carbohydrates (endurance athletes or power lifters come to mind), you can get them from vegetables & squashes that give you the energy sources you need without the added side effects of feces in your blood stream & type 2 diabetes (sounds like a good tradeoff to me).

Note: It’s funny that somehow both of these have made it into a standard american breakfast of cereal with milk – which is the absolute worst time to do this as the morning is your body’s prime time to burn fat and both of these “foods” bring that process to a screeching halt. Do yourself a favor & choose eggs & bacon for your morning breakfast instead.

80/20 your diet and take out these two foods from your diet. You might be surprised at the results.

Want to clean up your diet? Start with these two foods & cut out dairy & grains. Notice how you feel and see what happens.

Impossible Abs

The Prizes

Lets talk about the goods first because – lets be honest – they matter. The good news is that  I’m giving away a deluge of prizes. Yes, a deluge. Here’s what’s at stake. These are not your mom’s contest prizes…

First Place

Second Place

Third Place

I also reserve the right to lavish said winners with copious amounts of great looking impossible gear - but that’s just a rumor I’ve been hearing that may or may not be true :) .

How To Enter

Okay, now that I’ve got your attention, here’s how you can win all the previously mentioned deluge of prizes.

1. Get one of my programs if you don’t have it already.

2. Actually Do it (this is pretty crucial).

3. Take a before and after picture, and document your progress (bonus points for progress photos).

4. Send in your amazing success story.

5. Win the deluge of prizes.

How Long Is It?

The contest runs today through March 3rd. That’s 8 weeks and some change (to make it end nicely on a Sunday and all). That’s enough time to go through Impossible Abs 8 week program once or the No Excuse Workout twice. That means you get started now. Bonus points if you use Cold Shower Therapy to kickstart yourself out of a rut.

Winners will be judged by a completely biased panel of judges including me, myself, and I and announced 1-2 weeks after the contest ends.

How do you know which one to pick? If you want to really get after it and specifically burn fat, I don’t know of a better resource out there than Impossible Abs. The no excuse workout is awesome as well, but to be honest, it doesn’t have nearly the level of detail that Impossible Abs does. While you can see incredible results on both programs, but I’d be lying if I said that Impossible Abs customers won’t have the distinct advantage of a more intense workout & the in-depth nutritional component.

If you want to change your life – then change your life. Make it happen. Today. Get after it.

Whether or not you join the contest, I’d like to say thanks for being a part of what’s going on here at Impossible HQ. 2013 is going to be awesome.

Impossible Abs 2.0 Is Here

It’s here…again!

After releasing Impossible Abs in August, we’ve had hundreds of people pick it up, put it into action and use it to lose a ton of of weight and change their lives.

Here are a few of their stories…

Toyah lost 30 pounds in 8 weeks.

I started on 27th September 2012. 3 weeks later I’d lost my first 10 kilos (22 pounds). The last 4 weeks I just lost a kilo a week (2.2 pounds/week). When I started I weighed 72kg and on week 8 I finished at 58kg (14 kg, 30.8 pounds lost). Your program doesn’t seem like it has any flaws to me, because it bloody worked a treat!! Haha

Peter lost 16.2 pounds.

For the past 8 weeks I’ve been (mostly) following the Impossible Abs program. I was determined to finish no matter how many mistakes I made, and I still lost 16.2lbs and that’s freaking amazing. Thanks for putting the program together and helping me lose weight!

Abigail lost 15 Pounds in 8 Weeks

I started my 8 week challenge at 159 pounds. I knew it would be tough, as I love a good cupcake (and make them) but I can do anything for 8 weeks! The first week of my sugar/carb hiatus I lost FIVE pounds. After those results the first week, I knew I had to keep it up. The next 7 weeks were difficult at times but Joel was keeping me accountable.

At the end of my 8 week challenge, October 8, 2012, I was down to 144 pounds, having lost 15 pounds and 3% body fat. And I’m back in my jeans!

Updates & Additions

While I’m ecstatic at the results people have seen, I really want to make this as comprehensive as possible and build something that not only lays out facts and helpful information but really answers the questions that people have.

As the first group went through the challenge, I noticed a few questions seemed to come up over repeatedly. In the guide, I talk over and over about how nutrition is the starting point for any point of fat loss, so we took that to heart in version 1.2 and really put a focus in on the nutritional side of things to really take away any doubt people had.

We also worked on creating even more of a blueprint for proper nutrition by providing a shopping list and sample meal plans for the first few weeks of the program to remove any remaining excuses you might run into while working on making a big life change. As a result, I’ve rewritten entire sections, clarified some and have some completely new parts to the program.

All in all, here’s what’s new in the updated version:

  • How It Works: Detailed Explanation of the Science BEHIND the Impossible Abs programming.
  • How To Get the Most out of the Impossible Abs
  • Post Program Maintenance Recommendations
  • 2 Week Sample Meal Plan
  • Grocery Shopping List
  • Revamped Eating Flow Chart
  • Simplified Overview of the principles of the program principles.

“No Meat” Options for V*gan & V*getarian Lifestyles

In addition to all that, we’re including the impossible abs “no-meat” options for you vegetarians and vegans out there who want to know how to tailor Impossible Abs to your lifestyle (thanks for being patient with me guys). The new “no meat option” includes the following contributions from Susan Lacke of Competitor.com & NoMeatAthlete.comEsther Oakley of ABCVegan.com

  • Plant Based Protein: Making Impossible Abs Work w/out Meat.
  • Vegan Protein Sources Visual Overview

And we didn’t just throw this in just for fun either. . Susan actually underwent the vegetarian protocol herself and lost 19 pounds and 3% body fat, so if you’re vegetarian or vegan and worried about the program working for you – don’t worry – it can!

We’ve also included a 4 more video interviews with Vic Magary and myself that you’ll receive bi-weekly as part of the challenge.

As you can see above, the results coming out of the initial batch of challengers is incredible. We’ve had people aged 22 – 58, lose anywhere from 15-45 pounds in just 8 weeks. I can’t wait to share more of their stories with you in the next few weeks, but you can see a few of them up on the site in the meantime.

Note that if you’ve already bought Impossible Abs, you’ll receive a download link with the update absolutely free. If you haven’t yet gotten the guide, know that there’s no change in price with the update, we’re just committed to making this the absolute best resource for losing fat and getting six pack abs (Whiners need not apply).

30 Pounds In 2 Months: Meet Justin, The First Impossible Abs Success Story

Impossible Abs hasn’t even been out a full week and there’s already an Impossible Abs success story?

Dang straight. Here’s how it happened.

I finished my challenge in June and did a photo shoot to celebrate. Throughout the program, my friends and family started to notice my actions and transformation and their reactions changed over time accordingly.

When I started this whole thing, they were asking:

What are you doing again?

As I kept doing it and they saw the behavior changes and sacrifices I would make, they started to ask

Why are you doing that again?

When they started to see my body change and actually see the results I was getting, they began to ask:

How did you do that again?

After the photo shoot, I got a lot of questions from a lot of people wanting to know exactly what trickery I did to pull it off (spoiler alert: there’s zero tricker involved). About 50% of the people actually took what I said and did exactly nothing with it. The other 50% took what I said and decided to implement it and do something about it.

One of the people that decided to do something about it was Justin, my little brother. I should just refer refer to him as my younger brother, considering he’s about an inch taller than me and has about 20 pounds on me (which doesn’t matter too much since I can still beat him up :) ).

Over the past few months, Justin had thrown himself into his work, running his own business. He was working 6-7 day weeks, with multiple back-to-back 12+ hour days. Work was booming, but he ended up coming home exhausted and tired and letting his fitness routines fall away. He was getting soft.

He wanted to change things. Having seen my transformation first hand, he wanted in.

It worked out well. As I said, Justin had been feeling out of shape and lazy and wanted someone to kick his butt and I needed a guinea pig beta tester to test out my program before releasing it to the public. Also, as a bonus, I’m always looking for a good reason to kick his butt :) .

So I laid it out for him.

80% of the work would be changing his diet. 20% would be his workouts. He agreed and decided to do it.

Here’s Justin when we started out.

Justin Before Impossible Abs

6’3″ and 198 pounds. Not overweight by most American standards, but definitely not in the kind of shape he wanted to be in. The definition of skinny/fat. Soft, heavy and weak (sorry man, you know it’s true). He was ready to change.

I told him, it’s not going to be easy, but it’s going to be worth it. He jumped right in and was determined to get it done.

No excuses. No whining. Just action.

So he went to work. Day after day after day after day for the next 2 1/2 months, he got after it. Not missing a day of his workouts, despite being on a 5 1/2 week road trip, having a 2 week stopover in Portland for WDS, and having some unhealthy food and less rigid dieting. Overall, he stuck to the basics of the plan and kept at it. As a result, over the 2 1/2 months that he was following the plan, Justin went from 199 pounds to 169 pounds. Yup, he lost 30 pounds, all while somehow managing to come out looking bigger, stronger and leaner than before. Beast!

Justin Impossible Abs Case Study

199lbs to 169lbs and 5.8% body fat. Boom.

Seriously, he weighs 30 pounds less in the photo on the right than he does on the left. Sorcery? No. A lot of hard work? Yes.

Why Was Justin Successful?

There were a few very specific reasons Justin was successful.

Compliance

If there’s one thing Justin’s good at it’s listening (seriously, he’s an audio engineer – it’s his job). But Justin does more than just listen, he actually does what you tell him to do. Once I laid out the plan and showed him how to do things properly, he just did it. No complaining. No whining. Just doing. He had a plan and he stuck to it.

The best secret to fat loss and six pack abs, is simple consistency. Day after day after day.

Continual Progress Monitoring & Journaling

I don’t think Justin kept a journal throughout the program, but I did get an email or a text every week or two with a progress update or another shirtless photo (I have way too many shirtless photos of him in my inbox now and no you can’t have them). He consistently tracked his progress and when he saw his weight dropping, his strength improving and his shirtless photos looking better and better, that was motivation enough for him to keep going.

At one point I mentioned to him, “Man, you’ve gone kind of nuts on this haven’t you? I mean you’re going all out!”

He responded, “It’s easy to get excited about something when you see results. It just keeps you going.”

Yes it does.

Accountability

There were days when Justin wanted to cheat or give up on a work out, but I got the privilege to kick his butt and push him when he didn’t want to be pushed. Justin’s not the most competitive person in our family, but there’s nothing quite like having your older brother (me) challenging you, to make you want get out there and do your workout, regardless of whether or not you “feel” like it.

—-

While I would never say that Justin actually had a better transformation than me (what sort of older brother would I be if I did that?), but I will say it’s pretty freaking impressive.

30 pounds. 5.8% body fat. Just over 2 months. BOOM.

Impossible Abs – Zero excuses. No B.S. Just results.

Good job little bro.

——

Have you picked up your copy of Impossible Abs yet? What are you waiting for? Vic and I will be having a special webinar for anyone who buys (or has bought) the program before midnight tonight. No holds barred, any question you want. Impossible Abs.

Impossible Abs Is Here!

Impossible Abs

I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty excited today.

After 6 months of planning, testing, programming, some more testing, a ton of work and even more anticipation, it’s finally here.

As promised, Impossible Abs is now live. This project will help you burn fat, kill your excuses and get six pack abs through a zero-excuses 8-week fitness program designed to work anywhere in the world without fancy equipment or an expensive gym membership.

You can read more or pick up your own copy here (There’s a special bonus only for those who pick up the program within the first week!)

***

After designing the program around my six pack transformation, we ran Impossible Abs through some beta testers over the last few months. It’s still early, but in a few short months, we’ve seen some incredible results already:

  • Justin lost 30 pounds in 2 months
  • Michael lost 22 pounds in 3 weeks
  • Abigail lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks.

Here’s all the legal mumbo jumbo about results not being typical, etc (yadda yadda yadda), but I’ve found that each person who committed to the program and stuck with it, saw results.

3 Main Options

In order to make this available to as many people as possible, we’ve created three different versions of the guide in order to serve those with different goals, needs and budgets. The middle CHALLENGE version is my personal favorite (surprise), but make your own decision. We have a basic training program for the do-it-yourselfers out there and a  personalized coaching option for people who want one-on-one attention throughout the challenge. There’s also an experience option which is available on  a very limited basis to challenge & coaching members by application only due to it’s expense and complexity.

Usually, this is where most people will say it’s available for the next 10 minutes only and if you click off the page, you’ll get 20 banners asking you to stay.

There’s no artificial timer and no pop-up windows if you try to leave, but if you pick up the program in the first week, you’ll be invited to a special webinar where you can ask Vic and myself any question you like.

Like everything I do, there’s a 100% satisfaction guaranteed with Impossible Abs. If you’re not happy with your results, just let me know and I’ll send you a prompt refund.

On top of all that, we’ll be allocating a portion of all revenue will go towards building our #Impossible school charity project with Pencils of Promise.

If you want to burn fat, kill your excuses and get six pack abs, you don’t need an expensive gym membership or any fancy equipment. We’ve designed this program to be done anywhere in the world. The only thing holding you back, is whether you want to do it or not.

There are no more excuses.

It’s not easy, but it’s worth it

If you want Impossible Abs,  you can get it here.

Go do something impossible.

All About Impossible Abs

Impossible Abs

Whew! In the last week, I’ve moved and settled into my apartment downtown Chicago, finalized Impossible Abs and . I’m really excited to make this available to you guys.

Yesterday, we answered a bunch of questions about the program and tomorrow is launch day (9am EST sharp!), so today, I’m going to clear up any remaining questions about the program.

Impossible Abs: What It’s About

When I set out to knock “get six pack abs and do a photo shoot to celebrate” off the Impossible List, I was in the Dominican Republic and had no access to a gym. But, I had already put money down for my photo shoot 8 weeks later, so I realized I had to figure out a workout that I could do anywhere in the world, regardless of gym access or fancy equipment. So that’s exactly what I did – and it worked – spectacularly. Over the next 8 weeks, I lost 34 pounds and dropped to 5.4% body fat and finally got six pack abs. Once I shared my story, I received an onslaught of questions about what program I followed to do it.

Impossible Abs is That Program.

A lot of trainers, programs and websites will promise you “1 easy trick” or some “magic exercise” to lose weight and get ripped.

I won’t.

Impossible Abs is a no secrets, no excuses, no B.S. program.

And so, I’m going to do something a little different than most people would do. I’m not going to sit here and promise you that it will be easy – ’cause it won’t be.

I’ll promise you that it will be hard, but it will be worth it.

What’s Inside

Impossible Abs is the most comprehensive resource I’ve put together to date and the results people have been getting are really incredible.

In addition to the Nutrition and Workout Blueprints that show you exactly what to eat and what workouts to do over 8 weeks, you’ll get access to a growing library of over 25+ video tutorials of workouts and exercises in the program. We also give you nutrition, workout and weigh-in logs to track your progress throughout the program.

In the higher-end challenge version, we provide daily emails (56 total and counting) through the 8-week challenge where finishers get a special edition impossible shirt only for challenge finishers (it will never be for sale, you have to EARN it). We take you behind the scenes and show you how to hack the photo shoot to get that “extra lean” look for your photos as well as do exclusive interviews with expert fat loss coaches and fitness model

I also detail out my personal experience as a case study where I include weekly weigh-ins, photographs, workout repetitions and as well as every single thing I ate during the program. I really put back the curtain and even include some personal emails detailing my thought process throughout my transformation – even when things got really rough.

There’s also a personalized one-on-one coaching program level, if you’re interested in that.

A lot of people were curious about what the pricing will be. The average gym membership is between $25-$50 per month and most personal trainers charge anywhere from $60-$120 per hour and I’m very happy that the basic version of Impossible Abs will cost less than a single personal training session in order to allow as many people access to the program as possible. As I mentioned before there are two other tiers for those who want to take the challenge to the next level.

There’s no artificial time or quantity limit on this program, but there will be a special webinar bonus  for those that buy it within the first week, where you can ask Vic and myself anything you like.

I tested this program on myself first and saw amazing results first-hand. We’ve seen some incredible results from the early beta testers and we’ll be sharing those stories throughout the next few weeks. The program simply works and I’m excited to share it with you because I know it can help get you in amazing shape.

There are no more excuses.

And, as always, if you’re already ripped to shreds or simply just not interested, there’s certainly no pressure to purchase it at all. Thanks for reading :) .

****

I’m pretty sure that’s it. Check back tomorrow  at 9am EST when it all goes live!

How To Deal With A Sweet Tooth On The Paleo Diet

Sugar

Sugar.

You can’t escape it.

Even after you cut out the usual culprits – desserts, candy, and simple carbohydrates – there are still plenty of places sugars manage to sneak into.

Even the “healthy” foods are loaded with it. Take for example:

It’s simply everywhere.

The paleo diet, the nutrition framework in Impossible Abs, cuts out most processed foods and sugars. That sounds fairly straightforward, but when you realize how prevalent sugar is in different types of food, it’s not always easy – especially if you have a penchant for it. The question that comes up a lot is:

How do you deal with a sweet tooth on the paleo diet?

Sugar has some of the addictive properties of crack. I know first-hand – I have a sweet tooth that makes small children at halloween embarassed for me. It’s bad, but I’ve learned to tame it. It’s been tough. but it’s important to learn how to wean yourself off your sweet tooth without shaking and convulsing like an addict if you want to burn fat and see results. More than that, it’s important since looking great won’t do you much good if you’re running around  disheveled with a crazy look in your eye.

I devote a good section of the nutrition blueprint of Impossible Abs to this problem and I thought I’d share how I learned to deal with my sweet tooth while getting six pack abs.

How To Deal With Your Sweet Tooth And Implement Healthy Cheats To Deal With Cravings

The fastest way to achieve results is to not to cheat at all. Unfortunately, this takes a ridiculous amount of will power and let’s face it – we all get cravings now and then. So, if you’re going to cheat, here’s how you can “safely” cheat every now and then without throwing all of your progress out the door.

Know How You Cheat

You should be very, very careful when you cheat. Know how you operate – otherwise cheating can become a dangerous proposition that gets you entirely off track. Ask yourself, “is this really just a “one-time” thing or will it lead into more cheating?”

For me, it’s never “just one.” If I have one Oreo, I’ll have the whole box. If I have one snickers, I’ll have twelve. If I have a spoonful of peanut butter, I might end up eating the whole jar – thank you very much.

For me, cheating is very, very dangerous, so I stay away from it as much as possible. You might be better than me – congratulations – but you probably aren’t.

Know what “cheating” means for you. If it’s an isolated occurrence, then feel free to partake every once in a while – but if it’s the start of a slippery slope for you – be very, very careful about how you choose to cheat.

Change The Meaning of “Cheating”

The best way to minimize the effects of “cheating” is to redefine exactly what cheating means for you. This means finding health(ier) alternatives for cheat foods that you usually crave. Then when you get cravings for something that’s not usually on the menu, instead of completely derailing yourself with a face-full of Oreos, peanut butter and shame, you simply press pause while you indulge in some of your favorite off-the-menu cheat food items that won’t set you back 4 weeks.

Typically cheat foods for me include the following:

  • Red Bull
  • Reeses’
  • Nutella
  • Snickers
  • Peanut Butter (in embarrassingly large quantities)

If it’s got an exorbitant amount of sugar – it’s got my number. So, for the entirety of the program, I changed the foods I allowed myself to “cheat” with to much healthier alternatives including:

  • Dark Chocolate (over 70% cacao, preferably 82%+)
  • Avocado
  • Bacon
  • Banana
  • Raspberries
  • Almonds

The benefit to these alternate cheat foods is that unlike most cravings you may get, they’re self-limiting. Unlike Oreos, where it’s quite easy to eat an entire box, it’s very hard to eat an entire bar of high-quality cacao, very dark chocolate.

When evaluating your alternate cheat foods, find something you enjoy that you

  • Are difficult to eat in large quantities
  • Low in sugar
  • Low in carbohydrates

If you can find something that meets these 3 criteria, you can cheat on occasion without experiencing the after-effects of eating an entire bag of Cheetos in one sitting.

Channel Your Cravings Elsewhere

The best way to deal with cravings is to channel that energy or desire into something else.

Every time you find yourself craving something, instead of indulging in it, channel that energy into something else. For example, if you find yourself wanting a snickers bar, do 10 pushups instead. If you want to have a slice of cake, do a 60 second plank instead. If you want a bag of chips, go do a 30 second handstand and channel your cravings for unhealthy food into healthy habits. This does a couple of things:

  1. It gets you closer to your goals. Most cravings you’ll have are NOT constructive; in fact, they’re trying to ruin everything you’re working towards. When you focus that craving into something good, instead of taking 1 step back, you take 2 steps forward.
  2. It builds up better habits. Over time, you’ll find yourself enjoying doing pushups, planks or handstands more than the chocolate cake. In fact, after you’ve weaned yourself away from the extreme sugar content found in most food you’re craving, you’ll find those types of food aren’t as nearly as satisfying as you thought they were and instead of chowing down on a snickers bar, you’d rather enjoy a few squares of 92% dark chocolate.

Channel that energy and those cravings into physical activities that get you closer to losing weight and improving your health rather than using it to destroy the things you’re trying to build.

Limit Yourself By Time

If you must cheat, give yourself a time limit and keep to it. Try to stay clean 80-90% of the time and keep your cheat meals to one meal or one day a week – but keep it limited. That way throughout your week, you can push off your cravings until the weekend and then cheat during your designated meal, but keep it limited – because it’s no longer “cheating” if you have it every single day – then it’s your choice.

Ask Yourself if It’s Worth It

If all else fails, ask yourself if cheating is really worth it. Impossible Abs is an 8-week program. 8 weeks. Eight. Can you do 8 weeks without eating junk food? Is it worth it to you?

Ask yourself if it’s worth it: How bad do you want it?

Do you really want it, or do you just kinda want it?

If getting into the best shape of your life isn’t worth it to you – then cheat. But if you really want to get in great shape, why give into a craving that you know is going to move you in the exact opposite direction of your goal?

Ask yourself, how bad do you want it?

Incoming! Impossible Abs comes out in exactly one week. Enjoy any of your cheat meals while you still can :) . Otherwise, start getting ready for the challenge program.

My 7 Favorite Paleo Foods

Fitness, is the epitome of the saying “you get out what you put in.”

Your body does what it can with what it has available, but you can’t run off a bad diet. It doesn’t work like that.

If anyone ever tries to tell you you can electro-shock yourself into a six pack or sprinkle fairy dust on your food and lose weight without ever changing your diet, punch them in the nose and then run far, far away. Magical dust and contraptions you bought late one night on QVC aren’t the answer. If you really want to know how to get a six pack, you’ll have to head to the kitchen and change the foods you’re eating.

If you’re not willing to change the way you cook, you’ll never change the way you look.

My preferred framework to make changes to your diet en masse is the paleo diet. Fortunately, eating healthy, doesn’t mean you have to deprive your tastebuds. Real, healthy, paleo food can be delicious .

Here are my 7 absolute favorite paleo foods (plus a few bonuses). Enjoy

Avocado

Avocado

Avocados have a reputation as a “super food.” I’m not sure who categorized it like that, but all i know is that they’re absolutely delicious. While high in calories (so don’t eat 5 of them at once), they’re also packed with healthy fats, which makes them great for those times where you just need an energy boost. In fact, my new favorite breakfast meal is avocado cooked with the next paleo food on the list – eggs

Eggs

Eggs

Eggs are packed with protein and you can eat them anywhere, anytime and anyway you want to.

Hard boil them and take them on the go, cook them over-easy, scrambled, or throw them in a skillet with a bunch of vegetables and meat and make an omelet. You can even microwave them (seriously!). Eggs all the way.

Raspberries

Raspberries

Raspberries are absolutely delicious and unlike a lot of fruit, actually quite low in sugar. Combine that with their sweet and tangy flavoring, they’re one of the best fruit choices you can make and they’re practically addictive. Try and eat just one – I dare you.

Almonds Almonds Almonds

Almonds are an incredible nut and my favorite portable snack around. Forget chips, candy or anything else. Almonds are where it’s at. Get a bag of them and carry them with you wherever you go. They’ll give you something to knaw on, fill you up and won’t go bad. These are a great road trip food.

Coconut

Coconut

Coconut is such a versatile food. A pseudo-fruit/nut/seed coconuts are high in fat (the good, rare kind with intriguing weight loss benefits) and super-satiating. Coconut meat is great by itself, but the coconut products derived from the fruit also offers a solid paleo alternative to dairy choices.

While coconut water itself is a little sugary, it’s also an incredible recovery and rehydrating drink. In addition to coconut water, there are a ton of other coconut products derived from the fruit, although my favorite to use throughout cooking is coconut oil.

Brocolli

Brocolli

I used to hate brocolli. Hard, crunchy and tasteless with an aftertaste of blah.

Then I learned how to cook it

Simmering brocolli in coconut oil with garlic on top is not only the most delicious way to eat broccoli that you’ll ever experience, but it has the added side effect of making your kitchen smell absolutely amazing. Try it, it might just turn you into a believer in broccoli.

Chicken

Between the amount of chicken and eggs I ate during my six pack challenge, I’m convinced I wiped out the chicken population within 5 miles of my house. Chicken is cheap, delicious and some of the best lean meat you can find. No to mention – it’s incredibly easy to prepare. Simply cut it up, let it marinade and throw it on the grill until it’s got the nice char lines on it.

Grilled chicken is some of the best lean meat you can find. Healthy, delicious and versatile, chicken’s flexibility and adaptablity lends itself to a variety of marinades, running the gamut from sweet to tangy, you can eat it over and over without getting bored.

Bonus #1: Paleo Pancakes

Andy Drish made these for me in Portland and I fell in love – with the pancakes that is. The recipes differ based on who you talk to, but my favorite recipe I’ve tried is paleo pancakes by Mark Sisson. Make them. They’re delciious.

Ingredients include:

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 egg
  • 1 HUGE tbsp of almond butter

Mix them up, throw them on a skillet and you’re good to go.

Be careful on the amount of these that you eat (it’s easy to go overboard), but they’re absolutely delicious, and get you that pancake fix (of course if you drown them in syrup, you defeat the point, so either eat them plain or add a little honey if you need to sweeten it a bit)

Bonus #2: Bacon

Bacon!

Bacon.

Need I say more? Eat your heart out (and talk to Marla if you want to get creative with it).
