Beware the bullsh*t creep.
It’s silent, subtle and deadly.
It’s starts off innocently enough, but pretty soon, it starts to affects your life outlook:
- You sleep in 1 day – you start to think it’s okay to be late to things and don’t respect people’s time.
- You let 1 assignment go unfinished – you think it’s okay to not finish projects. You become a starter, but not a finisher.
- You forget to workout – you think that “1 day” won’t really matter all that much. It turns into habit, and you turn into a blob.
You think 1 time doesn’t matter all that much – but of course it does.
The more you allow the bullsh*t to win the argument in your head, the more you start to see it creep into your life.
Pretty soon, you’re surrounded by bullsh*t and you don’t know how it happened.
How you do anything is how you do everything.
Take care to not let the bullsh*t creep in.

Love it!!! I’m currently drowning in my own bullsh#t and i hate that i’ve become so unproductive. I used to be the person who would constantly take action no matter what and now i have absolutely NO INTEGRITY. Thanks for the wake up call today!

Joel, your words are so inspirational… I’ve read a bunch of self-help books but they can’t be compared with anything you write here. Your words have energy because you write what you really think, what you really are… That’s the difference between you and most “self-help” writers. One more thing that I want to say – I’m from Serbia and I’m really in a big shit now ( no “real” job, husband fell in love with another woman, no parents, “friends” always busy… ) but I’m trying, trying to go on… trying to escape from depression… Your writings really helps me. Thank you.

That is exactly how it starts. One small “it wont matter” and then in a very short time its The Three Stooges emergency response team running around trying to put things in order. Nice post Joel.

It is creeping in right now. I needed the wake up call. Thanks

I´m always so happy to receive these articles in my inbox, yelling at me to do something with my life. They always arrive exactly when I lack motivation, thank you good sir.

Thanks for that! Consciously pulling up the anti bullsh*t shield 🙂

Your articles in my inbox woke me up. Your words are really inspiring. Thank you

I actually thought like you said:
Just 1 day. Only 1 time.
Now I realize it. Thank you so much, Joel!

I don’t necessarily disagree with this, but it’s also important to listen to your body. The idea of “crushing it” is all well and good, but it also leads to burnout. It’s important to rest and relax sometimes; you don’t always have to be killing it.
Of course, I know this article is meant to encourage active behavior and not let the bullshit *habits* creep in, which is of course true. Know the difference between necessary rest, and procrastination / laziness.
Joel Runyon says
You know internally the difference between rest & laziness. I said nothing in the post about “crushing it” or “killing it” – the cautious mentality is killing your mindset.

Great message. Wish I had this in my life many years ago. But today is a new day and this mindset is what I chose now! Thanks.

What a great message. Hate having to learn it over a few times…

I’ve been trying to read for 1 hour each day and write for 1 hour each day with the goal in mind to become a better writer (among many other benefits from reading such great books). I’ll admit, sometimes the bullsh*t does creep in and I slack off, but I’ve been much better since I hung this quote from “The Obstacle is the Way” above my desk:
“Too often we assume that the world moves at our leisure. We delay when we should initiate. We jog when we should be running or, better yet, sprinting. And then we’re shocked—shocked!—when nothing big ever happens, when opportunities never show up, when new obstacles begin to pile up, or our competitors finally get their act together.”
It’s like a shield against the my own bullsh*t creep.
Great post. Great point. Keep rockin Joel.

Wonderful. Well put.
