Chicago Blogger Meetup

April 6, 2010 By Joel Runyon 15 Comments

Chris Guillebeau of The Art of NonConformity & JD Roth of Get Rich Slowly organized a Chicago meet-up for bloggers/fans of the two sites at the Rockit Bar & Grill in Wrigleyville last night.  Chris was coming back from some place exotic [like always] and was coming through Chicago, so JD flew out from Portland to take the Amtrak back west as Chris launches his newest product, The Empire Building Kit.

It was a very cool opportunity.  I got a chance to meet & chat with Chris [hands down my favorite blogger] for a bit and find out he’s real person. [I found out he’s a big Donald Miller fan too].  If you’re looking for something to blow your mind and challenge you to live an interesting life, read his free manifestos 279 days &  A Brief Guide To World Domination. [Check Out Donald Miller’s book A Million Miles In A Thousand Years while you’re at it]

[Chris & I – He’s Not Short, He’s Just Sitting Down]

I got to talk with JD [the first real blogger I started reading]. I got to pick his brain about blogging in general, his techniques and his experiences that he’s had from blogging for the last 10 years or so.  Wow.

I even mentioned my idea for this blog to him & he gave me the thumbs up for it. I figure if I’m passionate about it & JD liked the idea, I might as well give it a shot, huh?  Besides, I mentioned this blog to enough people at the meet-up that I figure I actually have to go through with it.  Crap! [Kind of awkward to go to blogger meet-up if you don’t actually have a blog] =)

I also got to sit down & chat with Adam Baker [Just call him Baker] of ManVsDebt.  If you’re into blogging and haven’t heard of him yet, stay tuned, you will.  Over the last year, he’s sold a ton of crap, moved to New Zealand, then to Thailand and now back to Indy while plotting his next adventure.  He even launched his first ebook last month. I happen to be moving to Indy for the next 3 months and fully plan on harassing Baker into having coffee, or some type of equivalent healthy alternative [Wheat grass shots anyone?] so I can pick his brain a bit more.

JD Roth Adam Baker & Joel Runyon

[JD, Me & Baker]

It’s very cool to meet people in person that you’ve only connected with on twitter or through their blog posts so it was definitely a great opportunity to not only the people behind the blog and realize how down to earth they actually are.

[…] I met JD in person in Chicago last year and I told him that he’s actually the whole reason I got started in this blogging thing in the first place. A couple years back, I  stumbled upon Get Rich Slowly one day via Lifehacker and started reading. One day he talked about this crazy guy traveling to every single country in the world that was collecting coins from the mint and putting them into the bank for frequent flyer miles (spoiler alert: that was Chris). That started my descent down the blogging rabbit hole. Not only that, but JD was also entirely way too patient and gracious with giving me my first guest post ever and has given endless amounts of useful blogging advice. Thank You JD. […]
