Durham Cares RAAM Videos

June 20, 2010 By Joel Runyon 12 Comments

[Update June 25th] Jesse gives a sweet case study on how he shot the Race Across America over on his blog & portfolio site: JesseOxford.com. He was also featured over on Planet 5D, a site dedicated to shooting on the Canon 5D.

They did it!

Team Durham cares rode into the docks in Annapolis yesterday morning about 6:30am. Their final time: 6 Days, 13 Hours and 14 minutes.

In under a week they did two amazing [dare I say impossible] things:

  • Biked from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD [Over 3000 miles!]
  • Raised over $100,000 for charities in Durham and volunteers pledged over 9,000 hours.

Jesse Oxford shot and edited a video for every single day of the race. I helped him out for the last half of them [from St. Louis to Annapolis]. They tell the story so much better than I could . There are 7 videos all about 2-5 minutes each. You should watch all of them [I wouldn’t talk about them if I didn’t think they deserved to be watched and that you’d get something out of them], but if you don’t have that much time, try to watch the final one . It’s definitely inspiring. Enjoy

This just looks all sorts of crazy awesome. Can we do this one day Joel? Maybe not in a week, but y’know. Just completing it would be awesome.

They did a relay right? Cause I know Robic finished in 8 days but he did it solo. Guy is a BEAST.

He is definitely a little crazy.
I talked to some guys on the course and they said he doesn’t sleep for the first two days. After that, then he maybe sleeps 3 hours/night. Sick.

These guys did an 8 person relay with someone riding all the time. Made me want to do the race but also just do it once for fun and ride at my own pace to take in the whole country. So beautiful.

    Joel,
You were so great to join our team midway through. Jesse knew just who to call in a jam. I kept thinking on that crazy descent in West Virginia I was going to run into the back of the Cherokee, but you knew exactly where to be just like the European motorcycle drivers with cameramen attached to the back who drive/film in the Giro, the Tour, the Vuelta, etc. Maybe you need to check out some pro-cycling events. 🙂 Seriously, great to have you and I wish there had been more time to hang out. Good luck with your awesome athletic pursuits this summer. I’m getting into the coaching business on the side of ministry so don’t hesitate to call on me if you want to talk running, cycling, etc. Take care, George

      George,
It was an honor to be a part of it and I enjoyed every second.

Haha, I’m glad we didn’t make you crash, it’s hard to judge how fast you’d accelerate on those downhills. I’m glad it came out well, you don’t even know how pumped Jesse was we got that shot. He was literally giddy about it (and for good reason, it was pretty sweet shot – Last video -1:35)

Hope to see more of you guys in the future, and if you need another rider on your next trip, let me know!

      Talk to you soon!

Brother! I totally missed the boat on this one.. Basically live in Durham!! Between Raleigh and Durham NC actually… If I would have opened my eyes a bit on your previous post, maybe I coulda linked up in some way and helped out… Very inspiring and truly amazing feat to kill the entire coast in under a week. LOVE stories like this man. Thanks so much for posting these vids and sharing with us all!

      Thanks for YOUR support Patrick.

Cool that you’re so close to Durham. You should check out durhamcares.org. They’re a cool organization helping out a lot of people in the community. Keep rocking Patrick!
