Pencils of Promise is a for-purpose (as opposed to a non-profit) organization that builds schools, trains teachers, and funds scholarships. In 2013 we partnered with PoP to build a school in Guatemala. This year, I’m doing the 777 Project to help build seven more schools. Click here to find out more how you can help with that.
The Promise of A Pencil
Table of Contents
Pencils of Promise started when Adam Braun once asked a small boy on the streets in India what he wanted most in the world. His answer? A pencil. Adam of course gave the boy a pencil and, after seeing his eyes light up, realized how much power and promise the tiny gesture represented. Over the next five years, Adam handed out thousands of pens and pencils to children in over fifty countries. Adam eventually realized that there was a need for an international nonprofit that could work with locals to keep the promise of the pencils going. Pencils of Promise was born.
The Mission
Pencil of Promise combines a humanitarian purpose with a savvy business approach, ensuring there’s a great ROI on every dollar spent. Its operational costs are covered through private donors, events, and companies, so 100% of the money donated to Pencils of Promise goes directly into providing better education opportunities for children. Pencils of Promise also sticks around once the schools are up, to make sure everything keeps working well and works with the communities to create curriculums and outside school programs to make sure that the education extends beyond just the classroom and lasts more than just a few short months. . All of the schools it has built are fully operational and improving the lives of children every day.
The Story of Juana Christina – Pencils of Promise
IMPOSSIBLE + POP
In 2012, we decided to build our first school with Pencils of Promise. It was an awesome initiative and we raised $26,496. Woah! It was one of the coolest times in Impossible history. In 2014, we’ve launched the 777 project – an initiative to run 7 ultra marathons on 7 continents and build 7 schools. It’s a massive challenge, but we’d love for to to help us.
