The Seven Stages of Learning Something New

April 20, 2021 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

When’s the last time you learned something new? A weird aspect of adult life is people are obsessed with learning for the first 20 years of their life, but care less about what specifically they’re learning. Then, a large majority assume that they’ve learned everything they ever can learn and are the same person for the next 50 years until they take a dirt nap. I wrote last week about pulling the trigger and crossing kitesurfing off my impossible list. ...

7 Lessons Learned from The 777 Project

October 20, 2017 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

Over the last 3 years, I finished 777: 7 ultras on 7 continents to fund 7 schools with Pencils of Promise. The journey was not as straight-forward as I expected - evidenced by the fact that I finished 6 of the races this year and the 18-24 month gap between races 1 & 2. This has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and one of the biggest teachers to me as well. So with that in mind, here’s 7 things I learned along the way (as well as a few ...

Lessons Learned Working & Traveling for 1 Year Straight – 7 Continents, 29 Countries, and 200,000+ miles Later

August 23, 2017 By Joel Runyon 3 Comments

airport-impossible

This summer marked a year straight of travel. In the last year - in fact in the last 6 months - I've been on all 7 continents and since I started traveling, I've been to 29+ countries in the past 12-13 months (I'm losing track). I didn't set out to do it, but as it turn out, I accidentally knocked another thing off my impossible list - travel for a year straight. As I've been trying to explain my life to people lately, it looks something like ...

How To Run Across Liechtenstein

May 22, 2017 By Joel Runyon 4 Comments

After my last ultra marathon in South Africa, I knew I had to finally come home…eventually. After getting rid of my apartment in San Diego last summer, I’ve been on the road for almost a full 12 months and am ready to be stateside for a few conferences and other events this summer. However, the flight from South Africa to the US is not a short one by any means and doing some 36 hours to get back in one shot isn't that much fun - no matter who you're ...

Ouch From South Africa

June 3, 2014 By Joel Runyon 5 Comments

Good morning from Cape Town! On Sunday I ran the Comrades Marathon - a 56 miles (89 kilometers) ultra marathon. "Ouch" is the main word that comes to mind post-race. Nevertheless I've finished and I'm quite happy about it. I'm currently working on getting my legs back at the moment, and while I don't feel exactly "good", I feel better than I anticipated (which is a nice surprise). I'll have a full race writeup and a mini-podcast out on ...

The Plummet at the Summit is Back (2014)

May 14, 2014 By Joel Runyon 6 Comments

I'm jumping off a bridge at WDS...who's coming with me? Yup - that's right - The Plummet at the Summit is back. Warning: Comfort-zone seekers turn back now After one year off, we're back to jumping off high things at WDS. For the uninitiated, the Plummet at the Summit is the annual bungee jumping event that we do in Portland in July. It coincides with the day before WDS (World Domination Summit) put on by my friend Chris Guillebeau. You can read about ...
